Visitor Stories

We interviewed some of our visitors, asking them about their families, their relationship with the food bank, what they enjoy receiving, and more!

Salomon

Salomon has been coming since early 2023, picking up for three families who live in his courtyard community. It’s a total of 18 people.

I feel very grateful for the help of those at this church who are involved with the Food Bank. Thank you very much. [...] I am retired, and the money I get for retirement is not enough to cover food for me and my family. Thank you.

His family has enjoyed receiving masa flour for pupusas and tortillas. He also really appreciates the vegetables, especially since he’s diabetic and trying to keep sodium to a minimum.

Daisy

Portrait of our visitor, Daisy

Daisy has been coming to the Food Bank since the pandemic started. She picks up food for three families in total, including the family of her friend who cannot drive.

Her own family has four members: herself and her three grown children. The additional food is especially helpful during periods where finances are a bit tight.

She loves the fresh food that she gets from the food bank’s distributions. She makes soups, salads, and pasta with vegetables. She jokes that she's not a very skilled cook, but eventually figures things out with the help of her children and the perfect combination of herbs and spices! The food distributions have introduced her to new foods that she enjoys, including ones that she had never tried before. For example, kale was new for her, and she enjoys it now because it’s very healthy.

Jackie

Portrait of our visitor, Jackie

Jackie has been coming to the Food Bank since March 2024 because of high food prices. She had seen our sign in the neighborhood and decided to investigate. She picks up food not only for herself and her three grown sons, but also generously picks up food for another family. She particularly likes the produce such as potatoes, onions, and cabbage. She fried up the cabbage she received with some tomatoes and squash to make a colorful vegetable medley for her family.
